Abies koreana ‘Blauer Eskimo’
A dwarf, low-spreading selection with blue-gray foliage; grows 25 cm high by 30 cm wide in 10 years; originated as a witches' broom on Abies koreana 'Blauer Pfiff' at Kurt Wittboldt-Muller Nursery, Verden-Eitz, Germany about 1974.
The light blue foliage of this selection makes it an excellent choice for many different settings in the smaller landscape. The texture is soft and the blue is not nearly as intense as dwarf selections of Picea pungens. It does seem to prefer some shade in the heat of the afternoon as well as a fairly rich, well-drained soil.
This plant is a grafted standard in an European garden. When grown on a standard, it can be planted among annuals and perennials with no fear of crowding.
Below is a stock block of Abies koreana 'Blauer Eskimo' being grown on standards for an accelerated growth rate as well as ease of taking scion wood.
