Picea abies 'Dumpy'
A dense, little ball with bright green foliage. The brown buds are very conspicuous during the winter. It originated as a witches'-broom on 'Pygmaea' at Red Lodge Nursery, Chandler's Ford, Hants, England about 1970.
When grafted, it grows much faster for about ten years, developing into a nice, dense ball about 12" (30 cm) across. Then the growth rate will have slowed to a pace more normal for this cultivar.
When rooted from a cutting, a plant will be about 2" wide after 3-4 years.
The plant pictured here is in our garden and has served as one of our main stock plants.
