A dense, miniature, nest-forming selection with a slightly irregular outline; at twenty-five years will be about 55cm wide by 60cm high; foliage is silver and green due to exposure of the undersides of many of the needles; originated as a witches’ broom discovered in 1972 by Ladizslav Fritsche near Rumburk, Czech Republic.
There are several blue, miniature-dwarf firs that have appeared in collections over the past 10 to 15 years. This is perhaps the most recent and one of the best. It has veitchii foliage with silver blue coloration and a slow growth rate. It has many uses in the smaller garden and even makes a very nice grafted standard.
This plant is being grown in a Dutch garden and shows its flat-topped growth habit when young.
This grafted standard is growing in an Austrian garden and shows how it develops a layered appearance as it ages.
