Sequoiadendron giganteum 'Barabit's Requiem'
An upright tree with a straight-groing leader and strongly pendulous branches; grows about 30 cm per year; originated with Elemer Barabits, Sopron, Hungary before 1990.
I prefer this selection over the older cultivar 'Pendulum' for several reasons. The major one being that 'Barabit's Requiem' develops a massive trunk much like the species. It becomes very impressive while the plant is still quite young. Additionally, this cultivar's branches arch out slightly from the trunk before hanging straight down. I have also noted that it does not have a wandering leader. It tends to grow straight up while the branches hang along the trunk, unlike 'Pendulum', which grows in a number of different directions and never develops any thickness to its trunk.

This is a 15 year old specimen of 'Barabit's Requiem' growing at Coenosium Gardens. Compare it to the 'Pendulum' in the next picture.

Sequoidendron giganteum 'Pendulum' showing the typical hanging side branches. This particular specimen does not show much of the wandering that is typical to this cultivar.

Here I am pictured with Dr. Barabits beside the original Sequoiadendron giganteum 'Barabit's Requiem' during a visit to his home in Hungary. Unfortunately Dr. Barabits passed away a few years ago.
