Picea orientalis 'Silver Seedling'
Discovered as a seedling in Holland by Konijn Nursery at Lunteren before 1980, this selection has a color unlike any other conifer. Wherever it receives indirect light the foliage turns white. The foliage that is more shaded remains dark green. In full sun the white burns and turns brown.
My plants are grown in high shade where they receive good indirect light and 1-2 hours of dappled sunlight. I posted pictures of one of my plants to show the unique color.
This cultivar is also quite dwarf. The fastest growth I have seen on any of my plants is about 4"/year (10 cm). I have had this plant in my collection since 1978 and have been selling it through Coenosium Gardens since about 1982.
I was told about four years ago that some European nurseries had changed the name of this plant to 'Sulphur Flush' I did not follow their lead because it would only add to the nomenclatural confusion that is already a problem in the world of cultivated conifers. Besides, I already had a selection under that name that flushes yellow in the spring.
A close view of the foliage.
