Pinus parviflora - Golden Banded Cultivars

Pinus parviflora 'Ogon Janome'

I have been growing this plant as part of the Coenosium collection since about 1980. My original stock plant, purchased from Joe Burke on Long Island died five years ago. The plant pictured here is one of its descendents.

This selection has fairly straight needles for a Pinus parviflora but typical buds and bark as well as outstanding foliage color.

Each needle has bright yellow bands, giving a dragon's eye effect to each shoot.

The growth rate can exceed 18" (50cm) per year in rich soil and full sun. But the terminal shoot will often die when the growth is this rapid, creating a very bushy tree.

Newly propagated plants need the understock attached for at least three years, then the plant will take the full sun and have a much higher survivability rate.

This specimen is 12-15 years old.                                                              The foliage is very bright.

Pinus parviflora 'Fukai'

This plant will grow more like a typical Pinus parviflors with twisted needles and an open branch structure.

The foliage has a bright yellow band around each needle near the end, producing a more subdued color effect than 'Ogon Janome' but one that is still eye catching.

This specimen is about 15 years old.                                                           The foliage is very nice.
