Two Golden selections of:
PINUS CONTORTA v. LATIFOLIA The Lodgepole Pine
Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph' and Pinus contorta 'Taylor's Sunburst'
Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph' is light green through the summer and well into fall, but by the time winter arrives, it is bright gold. We have five of these scattered throughout our gardens and they are like beacons of light on an overcast day. With the arrival of spring, the gold retreats and green returns. This picture shows the green returning to one of our 'Chief Joseph' plants.
Pinus contorta 'Taylor's Sunburst' is a most apt name for a tree that bursts into bright gold new growth every spring. The gold persists for up to six weeks as it gradually fades to green. We have this specimen planted at the junction of several paths and it is a traffic stopper in the spring, as pictured here. When the red cones develop, the contrast is striking.
